Man's first rugs were Gilims and straw mats. Archaeologists conducting extensive excavations east of Anatolia have uncovered remains of a 7,700-year-old Gilim. Yet, experts believe the world's oldest known woven Gilim belongs to the Arsacide era.
The women of nomadic tribes living in the plains of Moqān, Ahar, Arasbarān, and Meshkin Shahr mainly weave Gilims. Also, almost all the rural communities of the Eastern and Western Āzarbāījan, Sīstān va Balūchestān, Fārs, Kermānshah, Kordestān, Kermān and Kohkiluye va Buyer Ahmad possess the expertise of Gilim weaving.
Other handicrafts of Persia are also unique since Iranian artists produce handicrafts for thousands of years. Minākārī, khātam kārī (inlaid work), engraving on metal, silver work, jewelry making, ceramic and tiles, miniature paintings are among other famous handicrafts of Iran.
